ISA TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification)
| The New England Chapter ISA is partnering with CTPA to offer the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) program in Connecticut! Membership pricing will be extended to all CTPA members. The TRAQ program provides an opportunity for professionals in the arboriculture industry to expand their knowledge through education and training in the fundamentals of tree risk assessment. The instructor is Mark Duntemann.

The CTPA’s 103rd Annual Meeting is taking place on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at the AquaTurf Club in Plantsville.
The day starts with the Business Meeting and a brief talk by Sargeant DeVine from DMV about the violations DMV encounters during an inspection.

2024 Arborist Citation Award presented to Bill Gleason by Michael Almstead, President.
Melissa LeVangie Ingersoll, Z133 committee representative, will share the new updates to the Z133.
Eric Rutkow from the University of Central Florida, will speak about Trees and the American Experience drawn from his book American Canopy.
And the keynote speakers is Bill DeVos, Treeworks, and he will be talking about the Three States of Urban Tree Health in Older Trees.
In-between talks, you can visit the vendors, catch up with friends and have a great lunch!

The Connecticut Tree Protective Association presents an Electrical Hazards Awareness Program Workshop
Thursday, November 14, 2024
7:30am – 4pm
at the Eversource – Berlin Campus
107 Selden Street, Berlin, CT
Cost – CTPA Membership $85.00, Non-Members $100.00. Price includes lunch.
CEU’s will be available for State of CT 3D (Arborist License)/6.50 CEU’s, 6 (Rights-of-Way)/6.50 CEU’s, ISA/6.25 CEU’s, TCIA CTSP/ 6.50 CEU’s, Forest Practitioner / 2.5 CEU’s and Advanced Certified Tree Wardens/6.25 CEU’s.
(Please note: This workshop is no longer associated with the TCIA EHAP course. If you need to be certified by TCIA, please take their course online at the TCIA website.)
This workshop will focus on the hazards all tree care workers face when they work around energized electrical conductors. This awareness is an essential part of basic tree care safety. It is recommended that all people who work in tree care take an EHAP course. This one-day workshop will be led by Emmett Shutts, Cheshire, CT. Emmett is a licensed CT arborist, and Supervisor of Arborist Skills Trainer with The Davey Tree Expert Company, Dave Ross, Woodland Tree Experts, and tabletop live wire demonstration will be given by Doug Pistawka with Eversource.
During the seminar Doug and Emmett will share information about the electrical distribution system and the hazards associated with working near electrical conductors. Safety standards and best
practices for working near electrical conductors will be discussed.
Line Clearance Qualification for employees can only be certified by the employer however this educational seminar can be part of the training. Mr. Shutts will discuss how employers can implement this training and document certification. CTPA will not be providing this additional training or testing.
CTPA encourages all companies engaged in tree care to have an EHAP program in place for all of their employees.
Cost for this workshop is $85 members and $100 non-members. This price includes lunch, and full day of instruction. Ensure your reservation by November 8th.
If you are requiring certification from TCIA, you will need to take the EHAP course online. This course put on by CTPA, is designed to give education on Electrical Hazards but is not associated with the TCIA certification process.

CTPA is seeking applicants for the 2024 Arborist Scholarship. There are two $2,000 scholarships being offered to undergraduate students who are residents of Connecticut studying urban forestry or arboriculture. Students do not need to be attending college in Connecticut. If you know of a student who fits the criteria, please pass this information along.

The Association plans to offer two scholarships this year. The due date for applications is December 2, 2024. The name(s) of the 2024 award winner(s) will be announced at the 2025 Annual Meeting, January 16. 2025.

The Connecticut Tree Protective Association regularly honors individuals who have made significant contributions to arboriculture and to the care and protection of Connecticut’s trees. These awards are given annually and presented at the Annual Meeting. The CTPA Board of Directors is requesting nominees for awards for the upcoming Annual Meeting join January 16, 2025 and encourages you to nominate someone whom you feel deserves special recognition.

The Plant Disease Information Office will be conducting ELISA testing for detection of Bacterial Leaf Scorch on shade trees over the next several weeks. The link to the flyer is here: Bacterial Leaf Scorch flier
The flier announces the testing, how to recognize symptoms of the disease, a list of susceptible hosts, and instructions on collecting and submitting physical samples for testing.
1.) Samples from locations within Connecticut will be accepted from September 16th to October 31st.
2.) Physical samples may be sent directly to the Plant Disease Office at CAES. Please include the name of the town where the collection was made and indicate “BLS Testing” on the .
3.) If you can, please include digital photos of the trees the samples are collected from and send them directly to Felicia Millett at Felicia.Millett@ct.gov
