In the afternoon, there will be practical demonstrations as well as a guided walking tour on the grounds of the Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven.
CEU’s – 3D (Arborist), 3A (Ornamentals and Turf), 2 (Forest Pest Control) – 5.00 CEU’s. Advanced Certified Tree Wardens’ – 4.00 CEU’s. ISA and Forest Practitioner – Pending.

AGENDA
8:00 – 8:30 – Check in, Light continental breakfast.
8:30 – 8:45 – Welcome and Housekeeping
8:45 – 9:45 – Susanna Keriö (Ph.D.): Drought and Tree Health – Impact on trees, trends in Connecticut, and interaction with pests. Global drought-induced tree mortality is on the rise, but the impacts vary between regions, tree planting sites, and among tree species. The talk will cover how drought has affected tree and forest health in New England and Connecticut, and which areas and what kind of tree planting sites in Connecticut might be hit hardest by drought. The participants will learn the mechanisms how drought kills trees, and how drought and higher temperatures interact with pests and diseases.
9:45-10:00 – Break
10:00 – 11:00 – Susanna Keriö (Ph.D.): Mitigation of Drought Stress – Management options for supporting root health and drought resilience in trees. Soil health is tightly linked to tree health and how trees can tolerate drought. The talk will cover some management options for improving tree resilience against drought stress.
11:00-11:15 – Break
11:15 -11:45- Annie Shutts Mixsell: As Arborists, we are often focused on individual trees or small populations of trees. Annie offers a larger canopy perspective in the face of drought. Urban forests are critical green infrastructure that provide many environmental, public health, and economic benefits. Street trees, park trees, schoolyard trees, trees in yards, natural areas, and cemeteries are all part of the urban forest. Municipal management of the urban forest is a balance between maintaining healthy tree canopy, replacing lost or missing tree canopy, and reducing risk, all with limited resources. In this talk, Annie will discuss how New Haven is able to plant and water 1,000 trees per year, as well as the considerations that go into siting each of these trees, lessons learned, costs, and strategies to ensure tree survivability and long-term resilience.
11:45-12:30 Lunch: (A boxed lunch is included)
12:30 -1:00 – Dr. Gregory T Kramer: Native tree and Shrub options that can thrive in drought and other harsh conditions. Will cover 8-9 different native tree and shrubs that can grow in various harsh conditions, offer shelter and food to wildlife and are good choices for using in a warming climate.
1:00-2:00 – Susanna Keriö (Ph.D.): Practical demonstrations and a guided walking tour. The field demonstrations will cover topics like measuring volumetric water content, measuring compaction, measuring soil temperature and soil conductivity, what these readings mean for tree health, and how these metrics vary in different soil environments and tree planting sites. During the walking tour, the participants will also see examples of how the built and landscaped environment can affect tree health.
2:00– CEU’s and Adjourn

Results of the 2025 CT Climbing Competition, Hollow Park, Woodbury
Results of the 2025 CT Climbing Competition, Hollow Park, Woodbury

This past Saturday, 20 climbers (2 women and 18 men) competed in the 2025 climbing competition at Hollow Park in Woodbury. We had 40 volunteers and many spectators.
The day started sunny/warm/birds chirping and ended rainy/windy/lightening/thunder. We almost were able to finish the Master’s Challenge but unfortunately, weren’t able to get Tim Reynolds in the tree before the weather changed. Because of the circumstance, the prelim scores were used. Blake Duval had the highest overall scores but didn’t not qualify to go to the master’s challenge (not a CT resident). Jake Slade had the next highest score and was made the winner of the 2025 Climbing Competition. Congratulations Jake!
We would like to thank the 40 volunteers that made the day possible. These people dedicated a day in May starting at 6:30 am and ending at 5:00pm or later. Not only do they volunteer their day (in most cases the opportunity to work), but in lots of cases, equipment and employees. We are grateful and thankful for each one of these dedicated volunteers.
Here are the climber results: Climber Results for CT TCC 2025
CT Climbing Competition 2025 – Hollow Park

We are grateful and thankful to those people and companies that came out to get the trees competition ready. Special Thanks to Barts Tree Service, Neal Tree Service, Bartlett Tree Experts and Davey Tree Experts. Without these companies donating equipment and manpower, the competition would not be possible!

The competition is an all-day event and is open to the public. We encourage people to come and cheer on people competing.
If you are interested in a Silver Sponsorship or Bronze Sponsorship – The registration is open until April 25th.

CT 19th Annual Tree Climbing Competition – Woodbury, CT
Connecticut Tree Climbing Competition – May 3, 2025
Hollow Park, Hollow Road, Woodbury, CT
On May 3, 2025, the Connecticut Tree Protective Association will hold the 19th annual Connecticut Tree Climbing Championship. This competition will take place at Hollow Park in Woodbury. The competition will run all day, from 6:30 in the morning until it’s over (late afternoon/early evening). The public is invited to attend at no charge.
The climbers will show their skills in 5 preliminary events, with the 3 top climbers invited to face off in a Master’s Challenge.
All of the competitors are drawn from the ranks of those involved in professional tree care. Most are from Connecticut, although competitors are also from other New England states, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. As the competitors demonstrate their skill, insight, knowledge of technique and athletic ability through their tree climbing. they will also be showing an absolute commitment to safety and concern for the well-being of the tree.
The five preliminary events are the
- Ascent Event – A timed climb up a climbing line to a specified height (from 40’ to 80’).
- Throwline Accuracy – A timed event in which the competitor sets 2 different lines in specified parts of the crown of a tree.
- Belayed Speed Climb – A timed ‘free-climb’ (climber is belayed) 40’ to 60’ up a selected tree.
- Work Climb – Five workstations are set within a given tree, and competitors move through the tree completing assigned tasks.
- Aerial Rescue – Climbers are timed as they ‘rescue’ a dummy set in a tree.
In the Master’s Challenge three workstations are placed in a large tree, and climbers move through the tree completing assigned tasks. The climbers are both timed and scored, in that only those tasks completed within a specified time are counted and points are added or deducted based on the skill and commitment to safety demonstrated by the climber.
The Connecticut Tree Protective Association is an educational non-profit dedicated to advancing the care of trees in the state.
Currently, the Association has over 750 members, with approximately 550 of those members being licensed arborists.

Spanish EHAP – February 19, 2025
SPANISH Electrical Hazard Awareness Workshop, February 19, 2025
Wallingford Office – 60 Church Street – Suite 3A, Yalesville, CT – Please carpool if possible, parking is limited.
Hours: 9:30 am – 4 pm
Cost: $85.00 members and $100.00 non-members (includes lunch)
This workshop will be given in Spanish by Leo Roldan to attendees to make them aware of the hazards all tree care workers face when they work around energized electrical conductors. This awareness is an essential part of basic tree care safety. It is recommended that all people who work in tree care take an EHAP course.
This one-day workshop will be led by Leo Roldan, Certified Arborist, Certified Tree Worker Specialist, Certified Aerial Lift Specialist, Certified Treecare Safety Professional and TCIA EHAP instructor. Mr. Roldan will make use of the Spanish EHAP Manual published by the Tree Care Industry Association. All attendees will receive this publication. Training on the equipment that makes up the electrical distribution system will also be provided. Knowing what each piece is and what it does is an important part of being safe around electrical conductors.
Seating is limited!
