NEW, NON-NATIVE INSECTS AND PESTS
THAT MAY AFFECT CONNECTICUT'S TREES
The
USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) recently gave a grant so
that arborists, tree care workers, foresters, tree wardens and others who
inspect trees on a regular basis can be better prepared to find non-native
pests, should they occur in Connecticut. The Pest Alerts compiled below
are for insects or diseases* not yet known in Connecticut, but which
practitioners feel might be close to arriving in our state.
There is a similar page on
this site that refers to invasive insects and diseases.
If
arborists or others who work with trees find one of these non-native pests, they
must also know what to do. The following article outlines the steps
recommended to follow should one find a suspected new, non-native pest:
*
The organism that causes Sudden Oak Death is suspected to be present in
Connecticut; however, there is no evidence as of yet that Sudden Oak Death
itself is present. Arborists and tree care workers are urged to keep
informed of this developing story.
